My sister Rachel designed the lovely strand knitted pillow that appears in "Painted Desert." She called it "Chi-Wee Pillow" and there is a story behind the name.
Our Grandmother was a great reader up until her mid-80's and had a house filled with books. She lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico and the local library frequently had sales of used books that people had donated and our Grandmother almost always went. She'd come away with armloads of books and every time we would visit her or she would visit us, she'd give us interesting things to add to our collection. Some of the books were quite old.
One of those library sale books that our Grandmother gave us when I was very small was called Chi-Wee: The Adventures of a Little Indian Girl by Grace Moon. It became a great favorite with both Rachel and me. I think it was read through to us several times before either of us were able to read it ourselves. I remember taking it down and looking through the lovely illustrations (by Carl Moon, Grace's husband). It still sits on my bookshelf.
